One of my favorite tales of backstage golden age Hollywood, circa 1931 (anecdote courtesy Boze Hadleigh via an interview with Bette Davis):

Loretta Young, being the uptight religious fanatic that she was, couldn't stand curse words. She would prance around with a "cuss can" and collect a quarter any time a cast or crew member uttered a profanity. Well, when she worked with [Barbara] Stanwyck, Barbara once let the word "shit" slip. Loretta stuck out her can, and Stanwyck said, "Loretta, here's five dollars. Go fuck yourself."
